IT Customer Service Roles - Registration of Interest

Roles in London and Cheltenham

At GCHQ, we unlock the complex world of data and communications to keep the UK and its citizens safe, both in the real world and online. Working closely with our British Intelligence partners in MI5 and MI6, we protect the UK from threats including serious organised crime, terrorism, and cyber-attacks. A role in GCHQ means you’ll have varied and fascinating work in a supportive and encouraging environment that puts the emphasis on teamwork.

As part of GCHQ’s first line IT support, you’ll work in teams providing a critical service to the organisation.  Our IT Service Desk is different to others – whilst still focused on getting colleagues up-and-running when their IT has gone wrong, we’re unique in offering the opportunity to support a wide range of tools and applications that just don’t exist anywhere else.  We’re on a journey to move away from traditional telephone-based support, so you’re just as likely to be helping our people through a range of digital services, or face-to-face.

Outside of the Service Desk are a wealth of other equally critical teams which support our people in their day-to-day work, which we are also recruiting for.  These include teams which manage their IT accounts and accesses; purchase and manage software licensing; enable us to speak to our partners around the world; support the suite of services people can request in our ticketing system; and look for opportunities to automate our work to make us more efficient.  Specifically in London, there are opportunities to support cryptography, keeping track of our hardware assets and enabling the transfer of media between our systems.

In order to support others, we need you to be a competent user of IT , but you don’t need to be an expert - you’re likely to be the person that friends and family call to fix their computer or set up their new phone, and you’ll be confident using common applications such as Microsoft Word and Outlook.  As this will be your first step in a career with us, we want you to be interested to learn more about technology, too.

It’s important that you can communicate with others well and have a strong customer-focused mindset. Customer service skills from any previous role are desirable, but not essential – as long as you can demonstrate the desire to learn and develop.

To apply, you'll need to hold GCSE (or equivalent Level 2) qualifications in English Language and Maths at Grade 4/C or above.

Salary: £27,836 (London)
             £22,336 (Cheltenham)

The application window for our IT Customer Service Roles will open on Friday 9th December 2022 at 4pm. In the meantime, we encourage:

•    All those from an ethnic minority background
•    Women (of any background)

to register their interest in this forthcoming opportunity*

As part of the registration of interest, you will be invited to several online events prior to the campaign opening. There will be Insight Events where you can find out more about the role, hear from real staff and have the chance to ask us all questions. We are also offering a Skills Event which will provide general tips about completing a job application, preparing for interview etc.

These events will run on:

Insight Events – 8th December 2022 (12:30pm and 5pm)

Skills Event – 9th December 2022 (1pm)

The events will last for approximately 1 hour.

Please note that a registration of interest does not constitute a job application, nor will such registration have any bearing upon the recruitment process itself.  Any individuals who register their interest and who decide subsequently to apply for the IT Customer Service roles will need to complete an application form once the window for applications has opened.

*We are confining registrations of interest to these groups only, due to their current under-representation in our workforce. Once the application window has opened, we welcome applications from all candidates, regardless of their ethnic background, gender, disability and/or any other characteristic(s). Please check our nationality eligibility criteria requirements.

All applications will be assessed solely on merit.

This Program / Vacancy is closed to applications.
