Maths and Cryptography Summer Students – Registration of Interest

GCHQ offers a nine-week, paid summer placement for mathematics undergraduates, based at our site in Cheltenham. Students work on projects which are of real operational interest, supported by our full-time employees, forming small teams to collaboratively conduct innovative research. Projects come from all corners of the organisation and require the application of a variety of different areas of mathematics. Past problems have included assessing cryptographic algorithms, analysing complex datasets, developing new statistical tools and researching various areas of maths to ensure that British Government communications are secure.

Applicants must be current undergraduates studying for their first degree (Bachelors, Masters or equivalent) in mathematics or a Joint Honours subject with mathematics as the main component. By the start date of the placement students must have completed a minimum of three taught years of their degree (or equivalent for part-time courses) and should be on track to achieve a 1st Class Honours qualification at the end of their studies.

Information on our nationality criteria can be found here

The application window for the Maths and Cryptography Summer Students will open on Monday 2nd August 2021. In the meantime, we encourage:

·         All those from an ethnic minority background *
·         Women (of any background) *

To register their interest in this forthcoming opportunity.

*Please note that we are confining registrations of interest to the above groups only, due to their current under-representation in our workforce.

A registration of interest does not constitute a job application, nor will such registration have any bearing upon the recruitment process itself.

Any individuals who register their interest and who decide subsequently to apply for the Maths and Cryptography Summer Students will need to complete an application form once the window for applications has opened.

Once the application window has opened, we will welcome applications from all candidates, regardless of their ethnic background, gender, disability and/or any other characteristic(s). All applications will be assessed solely on merit.
