GCHQ, the longest standing code-breaking intelligence agency in the UK, is offering you an exciting opportunity to join our Legal Team as a Construction Lawyer.

At GCHQ, diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission.  To protect the UK, we need a truly diverse workforce that reflects the society we serve.  This includes diversity in every sense of the word:  those with different backgrounds, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ways of thinking and those with disabilities or neurodiverse conditions.  We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including those from groups that are under-represented in our workforce.

THE ROLE

We are currently recruiting for a lawyer to join the GCHQ Legal Team as a Construction Lawyer to advise predominantly on construction matters but with the opportunity to be involved in the wider Commercial team’s work too.  Often working as part of a project team, the successful candidate will provide legal support on major estates matters whether new or existing builds from the concept stage to completion and beyond.  In addition they will work closely on the stages of the project ensuring that legal risk is being managed appropriately and advising on how best to proceed or respond in negotiations.  In addition to construction matters, the range of work will include other Estates matters as well as more general commercial matters with other parts of the mission.
The successful candidate will be the first construction lawyer to join the team so this will be a role to develop and adapt to the needs of the internal clients with the support of the wider legal team who will continue to advise on construction and property matters as needed.

While the role is challenging, our flexible working policy ensures a healthy work-life balance. Wherever possible, we accommodate reduced hours or job share options, balanced against business needs.

REQUIREMENTS

To provide legal support on major estates projects (which are often based on NEC3/4 terms or JCT terms) for the design, build and fit out of existing and new builds.  Experience in advising on smaller property leases and licences, development agreements, FM services contracts and PFI arrangements would be useful as would experience of advising on competitive procurements and general commercial matters.

The successful candidate will ideally have:

•    Legal Professional Skills
•    Excellent powers of analysis, use of evidence and sound legal judgment and appreciation of legal risk, with experience in advising on construction matters and drafting supporting contracts.  Experience of NEC3 and JCT is needed with experience of property, planning or PFI being an additional bonus.
•    Making effective decisions
•    Collaborating and partnering
•    Managing a quality service for clients
•    Delivering at pace
•    Motivational Fit.

To be eligible to apply you will need to be a qualified solicitor or barrister in a UK jurisdiction.

The posts are suited to full or part time/job share lawyer(s) working a 37 hour week.
