Cyber-attacks are rarely out of the news and pose one of the biggest risks to the UK. GCHQ’s National Cyber Security Centre was created in 2016 to provide understand, reduce and respond to cyber-attacks – as well as nurture an environment where cyber security can thrive.

Our small but growing team co-ordinate pro-active and reactive communications on a regional, national and international scale from our London HQ in Victoria. The successful candidate will work with three Information Officers and report into the Deputy Head of External Communications.

One day will never be the same as the next, so you'll need to forge strong relationships with colleagues across the NCSC, Whitehall, the Security Services and the private sector. You will also be required to engage with No10 grid planners to ensure that NCSC communication plans complement the government’s objectives.

Senior Communications Officer: Media & Communications

We are looking for an ambitious, creative and motivated communication officer who has the agility to respond to urgent media enquiries about cyber-attacks against the UK, while planning long-term pro-active media facilities.

We fully endorse innovative and creative ideas to promote messages as widely as possible, and you will enjoy a wide variety of work including responding to media queries relating to significant attacks, liaising with documentary makers and promoting our annual CyberFirst Girls competition.

THE ROLE

Working closely with the wider communications team and policy officials, you will devise and deliver targeted media plans across all media channels and provide an authoritative, effective and professional service to the media.

Workloads can be very high and can entail early and/or late working, so the successful candidate will need to have flexibility in working times and be able to operate effectively in a pressured environment.

So if you’re a self-starter, with a flair for the creative, someone with experience working across the full range of communications disciplines, then this is the job for you.

REQUIREMENTS

The post-holder will need to be able to:

•    Use political nous and news judgement to provide advice and support to NCSC seniors
•    Work at high pace in a close team, including supporting team members on lower grades
•    Handle breaking news stories and planned announcements in a calm and experienced manner
•    Turn their excellent communication and writing skills into creative, proactive opportunities to promote NCSC’s policies
•    Work closely with Number 10 and other Government departments on cross-government campaigns to ensure all messages are consistent and stories are maximised
•    Contribute to policy development with professional advice on media and comms handling
•    Monitor and evaluate media activity to ensure objectives are being met and messages landing

SALARY

Salary £40,822 (pro rata should you work reduced hours).
