The longest standing code-breaking intelligence agency in the UK, is offering you an exciting opportunity to join our Research, Innovation and Futures department as a computational linguistics researcher.

THE ROLE

We’re looking for an experienced researcher to join our small team, to lead computational linguistics research tasks and contribute to our research community.

Given the social and cultural influences that affect language use, the wide range of human languages, and the challenges of creating computational models to analyse and process linguistic data, the nature of language technology research is inherently multi-disciplinary. We are therefore seeking someone who is comfortable learning new skills and approaches, who can bring together different research perspectives, and who sees the value of collaboration to bring in additional expertise. You will spend your time working on complex research problems with no established solutions, investigating potential lines of enquiry, and identifying promising new research areas.

In addition to undertaking your own research, this role will involve managing research projects, as well as mentoring and developing more junior researchers. You will collaborate extensively with colleagues from other teams, partner organisations, and academia. You will have the opportunity to further develop your skills across linguistics, data science, computer programming, and mathematics.

While the role is challenging, our flexible working policy ensures a healthy work-life balance. Wherever possible, we accommodate reduced hours or job share options, balanced against business needs.

REQUIREMENTS

If you’re excited about working with us and think you have some of what we’re looking for but aren’t sure if you’re 100% there yet… Rule yourself in and give it a go!

To succeed in this role, you will need to be curious about how languages work and how people communicate, and excited by the challenge of building computational models to capture various aspects of linguistic behaviour. You should be qualified with a relevant degree and postgraduate experience, or have equivalent professional experience in a relevant field. As an interdisciplinary area, we’re open to a range of skills: linguistics, natural language processing, AI, behavioural sciences, and computer science are all valuable backgrounds to bring to this role. Knowledge of languages other than English is a bonus, although you’re not necessarily fluent in a foreign language, and some knowledge of computer programming would also be beneficial. As well as experience in undertaking original research, you should have evidence of successful collaborations. Experience leading others in research projects is a plus, but training will be provided if you’re new to management.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

We’re proud of our inclusive and supportive working environment that is designed to encourage open minds and attitudes. As an organisation that values and nurtures talent, we’re committed to helping you fulfil your potential. With comprehensive training and development opportunities tailored to your needs and the requirements of your work, we’ll enable you to flourish in your role and perform to the very best of your abilities.

SALARY

Salary of £35,450 (on a pro rata basis), with the potential to earn skills bonuses and additional payments dependent on experience.

LOCATION
