GCHQ, the longest standing code-breaking intelligence agency in the UK, is offering you an exciting opportunity to join our organisation as a Data Modeller.

THE ROLE

Data is key to everything we do. As Data Modeller you’ll develop a good understanding of what data we have, where it comes from, how it’s used, and develop the approaches to enable this as effectively as possible.

You’ll act as the authority on how data should be modelled, what formats to adopt, and how to translate that into other shareable formats to most effectively enable the mission. You’ll be responsible for considering data ingest formats, data flow through systems, labelling, provenance, validation, and all ultimately to enable efficient analysis and use by the end customer. You’ll identify the most appropriate options, modifying or developing those as required.

We would like an individual to take responsibility for one or more defined problem spaces and/or feature sets, including:

  • Data models and formats
  • Defining the technical solutions to enable appropriate modelling, application, and any supporting vision / roadmap
  • Ensuring that data model lifecycle assurance / management requirements are met in a timely fashion.
  • Ensuring alignment with wider ecosystem and product visions / roadmaps
  • Undertaking (or ensuring) that designs are defined adequately.
  • Assuring the technical quality of the solution.
  • The definition and delivery of technical tasks (e.g. specification of mapping between data formats).

Our flexible working policy ensures a healthy work-life balance. Wherever possible, we accommodate reduced hours or job share options, balanced against business needs.

REQUIREMENTS

Experience with the following technologies is important, although not essential where equivalent experience is demonstrated:

  • Data modelling familiarity including meta-languages such as XML, HTML; other internet data formats, models/transport technologies such as MIME, JSON.
  • Tooling/format modelling/processing familiarity such as XSLT, XMLSpy.
  • Java, Python.

Ideally the candidate will have a strong theoretical understanding of data modelling and be able to translate this into practical solutions.

If you’re excited about working with us and think you have some of what we’re looking for but aren’t sure if you’re 100% there yet… why not just give it a go!
