GCHQ, the longest standing code-breaking intelligence agency in the UK, is offering you an exciting opportunity to join our Association of Project Managers (APM) award-winning Project Management profession.

THE ROLE

Our Project Managers deliver one of the most complex portfolios of projects in the UK and have a strong reputation for delivery. The pace of change means it’s unlikely you’ll manage the same project twice – you’ll never be bored! Our projects can be technical but many also drive forward business change and involve working with and influencing external partners. You’ll be accountable for leading and managing innovative projects, using a range of methodologies. You’ll communicate with stakeholders at all levels, and contribute to the continuing development of the profession. At a more senior level, you’ll also provide expert advice and guidance to your team.

In response to changing business challenges, we’ve broadened our range of delivery approaches to include agile and direct engagement with the business in a consultancy role. The excellence of our project management community’s work was recognised in 2017, when we won two Association of Project Managers (APM) awards – “Transformation Project of the Year” and “Overall Project of the Year”.

Whilst the role is challenging, our flexible working policy ensures a healthy work-life balance. Wherever possible, we accommodate reduced hours or job share options, balanced against business needs.

REQUIREMENTS

We’re looking for creative, flexible and forward-thinking project managers from all backgrounds and whilst. You’ll have a proven track record of delivery with a strong customer focus and be confident at translating customer needs into accurate requirements. You’ll have good leadership and interpersonal skills and be committed to supporting others and inspiring their trust and confidence in order to deliver the best outcomes. You’ll need to show us that you are comfortable with a high pace of change and can adapt your delivery method to suit your project.

PRINCE2 Practitioner or experience of Agile PM methodologies is desirable but not essential.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

At GCHQ we’re proud of our inclusive and supportive working environment that’s designed to encourage open minds and attitudes. As an organisation that values and nurtures talent, we’re committed to helping you fulfil your potential. We have a development framework specifically for Project Managers, supporting professional development through a range of approaches including classroom training, e-learning and work-based structured learning. We’ll support you as you maintain PRINCE2 practitioner status, learn Agile PM techniques and become a member of the APM.

The community is also encouraged to give back to others through coaching and mentoring, and sharing lessons and learning about new initiatives and other business areas at the monthly Project Management Forum. As Corporate members of APM, our commitment to supporting the development of our staff has been externally recognised.
