Maths and Cryptography – Solving the unsolvable

GCHQ has a number of openings for graduate mathematicians:
•    Practitioners - Should have, or expect to obtain by the start of employment, a 2:1 degree and/or a masters degree in a subject with substantial mathematical content.

•    Senior Practitioners - Should have, or expect to obtain by the start of employment, a doctorate and have experience of post-graduate study or research

Our mathematicians solve varied and interesting problems, often using some of Europe’s most powerful computers and other leading edge technology.  Problems we solve require analytical skills and a broad range of mathematical approaches, in a range of areas such as cryptography and cryptanalysis; signals and media processing; mathematical modelling; statistics and data science; analysis of very challenging data sets and streams; information assurance; and cyber security.  The variety of work is also reflected in a variety of outcomes, ranging from cutting edge capabilities delivered by interdisciplinary teams, to the opportunity to influence decisions made by government agencies.

We offer a unique working atmosphere and environment.

Requirements:

Applications are welcome from candidates with experience in any area of mathematics, statistics or in disciplines such as theoretical physics or computer science provided they have a strong mathematical component: internal training will be given.

You should have or expect to gain by the start of employment a 2:1 honours degree, and/ or a masters degree in a subject with substantial mathematical content. Candidates who have or expect to gain a doctorate and have experience of post-graduate study or research may be considered for senior practitioner roles.
