GCHQ is offering a unique and exciting opportunity for a small number of talented, progressive and ambitious individuals from all backgrounds who see themselves as future leaders of this unique, fast paced and specialist Intelligence and Security agency.

With SIS and MI5, GCHQ protects the Nation and our allies. We have a unique legal mandate to operate in the interests of national security, the prevention of serious crime, and the nation's economic wellbeing; and we protect the UK's secrets. Our adversaries operate in secret so the core of our work is also secret. GCHQ's technology, legal powers and authorities, people and partnerships, allow us to solve problems that no-one else can. Can you contribute to our nation’s security and prosperity with your innate leadership ability, excellent communication skills and a natural appetite to operate in a constantly changing political and technological secret world?

GCHQ's Future Leaders Programme provides an individually tailored programme of intensive development designed to identify and develop tomorrow's leaders, by building the skills, knowledge and experience needed to prepare you for a senior role in GCHQ within 5 years.

You can expect this to be a mutually demanding and rewarding partnership as together we develop your leadership qualities through a series of challenging assignments in different areas of the organisation providing once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. You will learn and think on your feet from day one, supported by world class mentoring and training.

Entry Requirements

You must have, or expect to achieve by the start of your employment a minimum of a 2:2 degree in any subject or hold a management/business focussed Post Graduate Certificate. You should be able to demonstrate strong intellectual curiosity, the ability to effectively communicate and engage with people and inspiring leadership potential which makes you stand out from the crowd.

As GCHQ is headquartered in Cheltenham, most jobs under this Programme will be Cheltenham based. However we will strongly encourage those on the programme to take on roles with industry, with Whitehall and overseas, which may mean spending time away from your home base. These experiences are important, but not essential parts of a varied and interesting career with us – if you think you would find temporary relocation difficult, your application is still welcome.

Support and Development

Development will include formal training as broad ranging as our business as well as individual support and mentoring throughout the programme.  You will also learn 'on the job',  in a succession of real assignments, each giving you further experience of different areas of our business with opportunities to take on management responsibility in many of them. Click here to see some examples of these roles, designed to give you detailed understanding of the full range of work in GCHQ. NB - These open in new window where you need to scroll down to the FUTURE LEADERS PROGRAMME and click the pink bar “Exciting & Interesting Roles…”  To the right of the first role, you will see further links giving you  comprehensive insight into the type of work open to you on this programme.
