Solving the unsolvable

GCHQ has a number of research and development opportunities for mathematicians with postgraduate experience and expertise.
Our mathematicians solve varied and interesting problems, often using some of Europe’s most powerful computers and other leading edge technology.  Problems we solve require analytical skills and a broad range of mathematical approaches in a range of areas such as cryptography and cryptanalysis, signals and media processing, mathematical modelling, statistics and data science, analysis of very challenging data sets and streams, information assurance and cyber security.  The variety of work is also reflected in diverse outcomes, ranging from cutting-edge capabilities delivered by interdisciplinary teams to the opportunity to influence decisions made by government agencies.
We offer a unique working atmosphere and environment.

REQUIREMENTS for these roles:

Applications are welcome from candidates with experience in any area of mathematics and statistics or in disciplines such as theoretical physics or computer science, provided they have a strong mathematical component; internal training will be given.
Candidates will need to have a 2:1 degree or above with a strong mathematics content and a minimum of two years’ relevant experience of using their maths after graduation, either in the workplace or through postdoctoral study or research.  Candidates who have recently graduated are encouraged to look out for our Maths Grad role.
