Sponsorship will consist of £4K per year of study. If you join us for a work placement during a sandwich year, the salary for a Cyber First is currently £19,519 pro rata.
The Scheme

Cyber First is our brand new sponsored student development scheme. Designed for exceptionally talented individuals, this scheme will not only provide you with a fantastic opportunity to develop your skills, it will also give you some hands-on experience of the challenges of cyber security in a national security environment. You’ll get a sense of what’s needed to keep the UK safe and secure. You’ll be exposed to the complexity of delivering business-critical enhancements under time pressure. In short, you’ll have the opportunity to apply your skills and talent to some of our most difficult problems.

Who’s eligible?

As a winner of a UK national competition, you’ll already be demonstrating an aptitude for Cyber expertise. If you’re about to head off to university in autumn 2015 – or you’re going into your second year at that point – and you’re a winner of a UK national cyber-related competition (such as the Cyber Security Challenge, National Cipher Challenge or the Maths Olympiad), you will be eligible to apply for this prestigious scheme.

The package

Successful applicants will be offered funding to attend a relevant STEM course at a UK university and will be expected to join us at GCHQ or a partner organisation either within HMG or within the supply chain for 8 weeks paid work during the summer (starting summer 2016), or for the duration of a sandwich year (starting autumn 2016). Sponsorship will consist of £4K per year of study. If you join us for a work placement during a sandwich year, the salary for a Cyber First is currently £19,519 pro rata.

At the end of the sponsorship, we would expect you to work in an area of National Security for a minimum of 3 years. If you leave within that period, you will be required to pay back all or part of the sponsorship fee. In this context, National Security is defined as GCHQ, MI5, MI6 and MOD.

Selection Process

Applicants must be British citizens.  GCHQ values diversity and creativity and welcomes applicants from all sections of the community. Further information on residency and nationality rules can be found on our careers website at www.gchq-careers.co.uk
