As a foreign intelligence service, SIS is naturally required to handle a lot of foreign-language material.  That means we need expert linguists working at the heart of our operational teams to sift it, extract intelligence and use it to prepare English-language reporting for readers in the intelligence community and across government. As one of these linguists, you will form a close relationship with your team to help you keep pace with the evolving requirements against which the material is analysed.

Operational teams bring together officers with a wide range of skills, and as an integral part of that you’ll get to see the wider context in which your work is used:  you’ll see how your expertise makes a real impact. You’ll use your languages in many different ways, from translation and interpreting to online research or providing cultural expertise to colleagues. Most importantly, you’ll be part of a community of fellow linguists where you can learn, develop, contribute and collaborate.
After initial training, you will join an operational team from your very first role, which will last three years. You’ll get to know the Service and learn about the intelligence field while being an essential part of the Service’s work right from the start. Learning and development is a priority for SIS, and language work in the intelligence field brings exposure to subjects and scenarios you won’t come across anywhere else, so you’ll develop your existing skills and learn new ones. You’ll be able to access, among other opportunities:

•    Formal training, such as our interpreter training and validation programme
•    Peer workshops and online learning
•    A bespoke skills framework for formal validation, which can attract salary supplements
•    A network of language-specific cadre groups, to celebrate and share language interests and foreign expertise.

Joining SIS brings a variety of benefits including an excellent work life balance with flexible working opportunities and a good pension scheme. With comprehensive all-round support and ongoing professional development in an inclusive, friendly and caring environment, it all makes for a fulfilling and rewarding career protecting the UK’s national security and economic well-being.
