Our community of change professionals plays a key part in driving forward the new digital age here at MI6 – also known as the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS).  We deliver the business change, technology and applications critical to promoting and protecting the UK’s interests at home and overseas.  Not only are we experts in our own specialisms of business change, business analysis and project management, we are also experts at building relationships with our stakeholders, adapting our approach as the environment changes and learning new ways to solve problems.  The world doesn’t sit still so why should we?  So if you want to lead unknown change to solve unexpected problems in an uncertain environment in an unpredictable future then read on.

A day in the life of a Scrum Master

  • As a Scrum Master in SIS I am proud to work on an array of unique projects to help our operational teams better promote and protect the UK’s interests at home and overseas.  I act as a servant-leader to help my scrum team deliver the prioritised change and technology needed by the operational teams.  I do this through the strong relationships I have built with the end users and everyone involved in the delivery process.
  • I run daily stand-ups and fortnightly sprint planning and retrospectives to keep my team focused on delivering to agreed priorities and improving how we work together.  I support my Release Train Engineer by playing a key role in Program Increment (PI) events.
  • I realise not everyone understands Agile as well as I do so I spend much of my time coaching others across the organisation in the use of Agile and routinely adapt my use of the Agile framework to fit the changing project environment.
  • I like to learn by experimentation, and I encourage those I work with, and those I line manage to do the same.

Who I am

  • As a Scrum Master I act as a servant leader that listens to and supports my team. Encouraging them, I support their development as well as my own.
  • I understand and empathise with others
  • I enjoy working collaboratively and adjust my engagement style as needed
  • I am good at building strong relationships with people at all levels
  • I enjoy learning and sharing knowledge and encourage my colleagues do the same
  • I am calm, organised and focused and am comfortable de-prioritising the least important work
  • I achieve results through engaging with people, not by using my authority over them
  • I help others without diminishing their commitment
  • I enjoy developing others and am comfortable line managing
  • I am as comfortable delivering change as I am delivering technology
  • I am comfortable leading stand-ups, sprint planning and retrospectives and fulfilling the Scrum Master role
  • Ideally (but not essentially) I am a Certified Scrum Master

What I do

  • I share in our collective responsibility to promote and protect the UK’s interests at home and overseas. Our teams work closely with each other and with end users, so it’s important that I can communicate and share my knowledge.
  • I apply the Scrum process and help the team communicate, coordinate, and cooperate to deliver the highest priority outcomes, removing impediments to their progress
  • I facilitate team and program events, such as stand-ups, retrospectives, sprint planning, backlog refining and elements of programme increment (PI) planning
  • I coach and assist the team (and other colleagues) in implementing the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe)
  • I build and maintain strong relationships with end users and all those in the delivery chain
  • I prioritise my line management responsibilities and balance the needs of the business with the needs of the individuals I line manage
  • Learning and development is central to our culture and we invest heavily in our people. As part of my SIS career I can expect support in broadening and deepening my technical and non-technical skills.  I will have access to a wide variety of classroom and online learning, as well as in-house development programmes and schemes.

  • About SIS

SIS simply could not operate without our talented multi-disciplinary teams.  We exist to collect Britain’s foreign intelligence that helps protect the UK’s security and prosperity.  This secret intelligence is gathered all over the world and reported to the Government – informing policies that counter threats to our country.
