These varied software roles with MI6 – or as we’re more formally called, the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) - offer opportunities to use your established skills and experience to address unique challenges that are fundamental to intelligence gathering and ultimately help safeguard our nation.  Working on a wide array of software products and underlying technologies, you will contribute to the protection of the UK’s national interests both at home and overseas.      

About the role

Working closely with a wide variety of customers across the Service and in other Government agencies, you’ll enjoy a varied and challenging role that makes a valuable contribution and delivers off the scale results.   You will be involved in all stages of the software development lifecycle from design and documentation, programming, systems integration through to helping customers resolve problems and fixing bugs. You will be developing or integrating highly sensitive systems using time critical information.  By utilising individually tailored training packages, we provide time for you to further develop and enhance your skills and learn new programming languages. For example, formal training is currently available on: Java, JavaScript, .Net, C#, C++, Perl, Python, Red Hat Certified Systems and Cloudera Hadoop frameworks.  You will also be given the opportunity to develop expertise in the following:

  • Design of applications using:
    • Service/Resource Oriented Architectures focussing on RESTful techniques.
  • The implementation and integration of commercial off the shelf (COTS) and government off the shelf (GOTS) applications.
  • Software Development following Agile development methodologies - focussing on:
    • UX - User Experience.
    • Javascript – Node.js, AngularJS
    • Cloudera Hadoop framework.
  • Database application design, development and administration of:
    • NoSQL Databases like MongoDB, CouchDB and Redis.
    • Relational Databases like Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQL Server.
  • Hadoop ecosystem and BigData
  • Web Application Frameworks

About you

Your skills may have been developed through a degree, vocational courses/study, in the workplace or a combination of these.

As an experienced IT professional you will have solid experience of at least one of the programming languages listed above, a good understanding of the software development lifecycle (especially Agile development methodologies) and problem solving skills. You will have good communication skills and a desire to learn and progress your own development.  We welcome applications from candidates who have equivalent experience gained in the workplace.  We would also welcome applications from individuals from a non-development background, for example IT support.
