Join MI6 - or as we’re often known, the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) - and use your experience of developing software, analysing networks, data forensics or pen-testing to support technical operations that are fundamental to intelligence gathering and ultimately help safeguard our nation.

Role

As a Cyber Operations Specialist at MI6 you’ll deploy a wide array of advanced technical capabilities to support delivery of high impact intelligence that protects national security and the UK’s interests.   You’ll work with other technical specialists to identify, counter and provide advice on complex and evolving technical threats to the UK or our allies. You will also translate your knowledge in a way that people who aren’t technical experts can understand.  You will be based in the UK but may have the opportunity to work overseas.

Computer and mobile device security continues to advance at a rapid pace, so it’s vital for MI6 to stay ahead of the game.  That’s why you will receive the training to develop and maintain the right skills for the job and broaden your knowledge across a wide spectrum of capabilities.

Skills and qualifications

You’ll have, or be expecting to achieve by autumn 2018, at least a 2:2 in a degree or equivalent qualification in a technology related field such as computer science, computer security, software engineering, digital forensics or another similar STEM subject.

You may have low level knowledge of operating systems (e.g. Linux, Windows) and good knowledge of Cyber Security.  You’ll be excited about technology and interested in new capabilities and the opportunities they present. You will want to learn and develop throughout your career.

You will also require good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to clearly explain complex technical information in simple terms.

You will have good problem solving skills, resilience, and an ability to work both independently and as part of a team. You’ll build relationships and collaborate well with a diverse range of colleagues and contacts.

About MI6 and IT

We operate within a strict legal framework and place emphasis on positive values and care for our people.

MI6 could not operate without its technology teams.  They ensure the security and effectiveness of an international communications network that operates around the world.  Our work is unique and our staff are committed to make a difference and protect the UK.
