Join MI6 and use your extensive experience of design and systems engineering to enable an organisation that protects the security of the UK.

Role

As a Programme Level Systems Engineer at MI6 you will be responsible for the Systems Engineering (SE) and system definition of part of MI6’s enterprise, working within the enterprise SE approach, MI6’s Technology Strategy and enterprise-wide technology architecture. You will lead the design and systems engineering approach for the creation of complex new systems, or the upgrade of existing systems.  Taking a lead role as part of the Programme or Portfolio Design Authority, you will lead in the development of key vision, blueprint documentation, associated systems engineering artefacts and corresponding lifecycle approaches to enable successful project and programme delivery as part of the System of Systems.  You will work within a group of Solutions Architects working on other programmes to identify and manage interdependencies and ensure overall coherence and with capability owners to develop and grow systems on an ongoing basis.

For these highly rewarding roles you will also be responsible for:

  • Working with stakeholders to maintain the Commissioning Requirements of the programme & associated projects, understanding the complexity and reducing uncertainty of those commissions.
  • Producing systems engineering artefacts such as systems requirements, the High Level Design and Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP) tailoring the approach and considering all aspects of People, Process, Information, Technology and Facilities (PPITF).
  • Conducting trade off studies.
  • Develop and maintain segment / supersystem architectures and systems engineering artefacts responsible for the programme and / or one or more Systems of System domains.
  • Develop and maintain strategies and management plans for end to end integration, verification, validation and formal acceptance.
  • Delivering systems designs that are feasible, complete, secure and sufficient to meet the business needs.
  • Recommending engineering approaches to building and delivering the systems as described by both high and low level designs.
  • Assuring the work of other project Systems Engineers as part of a formal gated lifecycle to assess maturity and ensure the viability of designs.
  • Maintaining effective relationships with both external third parties and internal disciplines including business analysis, business change, and software/test teams.

Skills and qualifications

To be considered for these roles, candidates should have an engineering or technical degree, extensive experience of systems engineering at a senior level and an understanding of modern IT.

In addition to the above, we are looking for candidates who can demonstrate performance against the INCOSE and SFIA frameworks at the following levels:

  • INCOSE – Practitioner level (Systems Thinking, Holistic Lifecycle View and Systems Engineering Management) – note practitioner level is required across these themes and not necessarily within each associated competency.
  • SFIA Solutions Architects – levels 5/6
  • SFIA Systems Design – levels 5/6

It should be noted that experience in lieu of a degree and / or equivalent competence to that of INCOSE and SFIA will be considered.

About MI6 and IT

MI6 exists to collect secret foreign intelligence that helps protect the UK’s security and prosperity.  This intelligence is gathered all over the world and reported to the Government - informing policies that counter threats to this country including weapons proliferation, terrorism and regional instability

MI6 could not operate without its technology teams.  They ensure the security and effectiveness of an international communications network that operates around the world.  And they also make sure that everyone has the IT they need to do their job securely, whatever their role.
