A day in the life of a Release Train Engineer 

As a Release Train Engineer in SIS, I am proud to lead an array of unique projects. I work alongside professionals from across our organisation, including product managers representing our core business, business analysts, business change experts, system architects, hardware and software developers and scrum masters.

I create a culture of openness, transparency and collaboration.  I coach and influence teams and individuals less familiar with Agile delivery than me. I adapt my communication and leadership style to build strong relationships at all levels. I am a trusted servant leader, guiding people in problem identification and decision-making. I bring teams together, encouraging them to share knowledge, learn from each other, adapt and continuously improve.

Who I am

  • I am highly motivated with practical experience leading Agile delivery of both business change and technology projects. I lead teams of people from all different backgrounds and levels of Agile experience.  enjoy working collaboratively, sharing knowledge and encouraging teams (and myself) to develop
  • I use a pragmatic approach to implementing Agile and Entrepreneurial frameworks and put people and relationships above process
  • I adapt my leadership style and am comfortable line managing staff
  • I translate between strategic and tactical thinking and bridge the gap between those who do and don’t speak project & tech
  • I have practitioner experience in at least one of the following:  Project management, Scrum Master, Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), Lean-Agile or other equivalent frameworks
  • I have used Agile approaches to deliver business change and/or technology
  • I have experience leading Program increments (PI), sprint retrospectives, stand-ups
  • Ideally (but not essentially) I am SAFe qualified, or a qualified Release Train Engineer


What I do

  • I share in our collective responsibility to promote and protect the UK’s interests at home and overseas.  Our teams work closely with each other and with end users, so it’s important that I can communicate and share my knowledge.
  • I manage and optimise the flow of value through the Agile Release Train (ART) through my team of Scrum Masters
  • I build collaboration between teams and stakeholders to deliver what the business needs and demonstrate the benefits realised
  • I facilitate PI Planning and the event itself
  • I track and communicate key ART execution metrics
  • I facilitate relentless improvement for the ART
  • I manage risk and dependencies
  • I share knowledge and proactively seek ways to improve our use of Agile and other ways of working
  • I build and maintain strong relationships with Stakeholders and support their decision making
