Operational Data Scientist Ref. 1749
Data Analysis plays an integral role in the modern Service’s operational delivery capability. At the cutting edge of that capability are a cadre of data scientists; working alongside the wider analysis skills group, they provide specialist analysis skills and insight.
As a data science practitioner, you will have the opportunity to use your skills, as part of our wider data science cadre, to support SIS missions. You will be proficient in a range of data science tools, and use your knowledge to develop analytical tools and techniques for both technical and non-technical audiences. You will work closely with operational teams to identify the most complex analysis requirements, and work with them to identify, develop and implement innovative solutions.
You will play a large part in capability development and innovation in data analysis, supporting the ongoing growth of the wider analyst community through data science work. You will develop a good understanding of new and existing analysis technology and methods across our partner agencies, industry and academia, and understand how SIS can utilise these through data science to improve our analysis capability.
Through these efforts, you will play a defining role in helping to fully integrate data science and analysis as a standard component of SIS operational planning and implementation. JOB REQUIREMENTS & SKILLS
You must have an established background in data analysis and/or data science and be able to evidence experience and skills in this area.
You must have a mixture of data science skills, including knowledge of coding languages and data science technologies – including (but not limited to) SQL and/or PYTHON, JAVA scripting, knowledge of Hadoop and related technologies as well as experience of advanced data manipulation techniques, networking technologies, and machine learning.
You will need to be able to help manage and develop a team with a broad range of skills and experience as well as work with the data science community to ensure the team continues to meet demanding delivery expectations.
You will work closely with a wide range of teams to ensure the data science capability is in place to support the Service as a data-led organisation. You will need to be able to set goals, monitor progress, identify risks and issues, and take steps to deal with problems when needed.
You will be a good communicator, both verbally and in writing: it is essential that you are a confident, credible and articulate representative for data science, able to explain to partners and external agencies the nuances of how we apply data science. You will be required to promote SIS within the wider data science community.
You’ll be able to identify business problems where scientific methods can provide effective solutions, and generate hypothesis and research existing scientific methods in order to test them.
- Advanced coding skills (using e.g. Python or other relevant programming languages) including relevant data science packages/libraries.
- Ability to create algorithms based on existing scientific methods and apply them to in-house data to produce innovative analysis capability.
- Understanding of relevant science methods applicable to data analysis.
- Understanding of the research and development lifecycle, proven experience of planning and managing small research projects.
- Unconstrained by tools/environments; able to recognise, learn/adapt the best tools for the job, utilising the flexible set-up in the most appropriate environment.
