Data Engineer Ref. 1748

Technology Roles
Central London
£39,754 – £42,731 (depending on experience and qualifications) plus up to £7,500 skills allowance payable after joining (subject to skills assessment)

The Data Ingestion team is critical to the Service’s ability to exploit and obtain maximum value from rapidly growing collections of bulk data.  Data exploitation is key to the challenge of mastering ‘Big Data’.

This role is responsible for analysing and processing raw data acquired from various sources, so that it is available for advanced analysis via internal systems.

As the need for data exploitation increases, we need to actively enhance our data processing capabilities so they are faster and less resource intensive, whilst retaining the integrity and utilisation of the data.

As one of the Data Ingestion specialists you will be expected to undertake detailed technical analysis and transformation of raw data which will challenge you in areas outside of normal engineering practices. Your core responsibility within the team will be to analyse, cleanse and adapt various incoming data sources into agreed standard forms using software tools.

Supporting a team manager, you will be responsible for implementing better ways of working and ensuring best practise is documented within the team. You will often be the first point of contact and thus will be expected to provide direct assistance to customers.

Your highly effective communication skills will be essential as you help customers with the analysis, experimentation and management of their data.

Although not a pre-requisite for the role, those with strong programming skills will have the opportunity to develop their own data processing and querying tools to assist with transformation and analysis of the data.

  • You will be required to have experience of a range of corporate analysis tools and coding languages including Python and SQL.
  • Basic programming/coding skills and familiarity of standard data science development environments.
  • Ability to quickly learn new tools and be flexible and creative in finding the right tool/approach for the given problem.
  • Basic awareness of relevant science methods and how to explore existing research through literature reviews.
  • Awareness of the research and development life-cycle.
