We are MI5, our mission is to keep the UK safe. MI5 protects our national security from threats such as terrorism and espionage. Our operations are hugely varied, which is why increasing the diversity of our people is needed more than ever before.

To protect the UK, we need people with different perspectives and backgrounds. There’s no one ‘type’ of person we recruit. Inclusion is at the heart of our mission. With your perspective, we’ll see the world more clearly. To join, you’ll have (or be expecting) a 2:2 degree or above in any degree discipline or have relevant work experience. But no matter your experience or background, you’ll get lots of dedicated support when you join.

Our Intelligence Officers play a crucial role in keeping the country safe, which makes for one of the most challenging, stimulating and rewarding careers you can imagine. As the country faces increased threats to national security, your role as an Intelligence Officer gives you the opportunity to have a tangible impact on the security of the UK.

Upon successfully completing our structured Intelligence Officer Development Programme (IODP), you’ll be an accredited Intelligence Officer (IO). Your first role could be countering threats from International or Northern Ireland related terrorism, to espionage or hostile states. You’ll set investigative strategies and make recommendations based on your own assessments. You will need to collaborate with colleagues including the Police, MI6, GCHQ, Whitehall, foreign liaison, and a wide range of internal specialists to thwart threats. In short, you’ll have a genuine influence on how we protect the country.

For more information, please visit the Intelligence Officer Development Programme page on our website.

The application window for the Intelligence Officer Development Programme will open on 17th October 2022. In the meantime, we are looking for females and individuals who are from an Ethnic Minority background*, to register their interest in this forthcoming opportunity. As part of the registration of interest, you will be invited to an online event prior to the campaign opening.

Please note that a registration of interest does not constitute a job application, nor will such registration have any bearing upon the recruitment process itself.  Any individuals who register their interest and who decide subsequently to apply to the Intelligence Officer Development Programme, will need to complete an application form once the window for applications has opened.

* We are confining registrations of interest to Females and those from an Ethnic Minority background only, due to their current under-representation in our workforce.  Once the application window has opened, we will welcome applications from all candidates, regardless of their ethnic background, gender, disability and/or any other characteristic(s).  All applications will be assessed solely on merit.
