MI5 is responsible for protecting the UK from threats to our National Security. Our teams work tirelessly to ensure the safety and prosperity of our country, countering threats from terrorism and espionage. Whatever your role, you will contribute to our mission in keeping the country safe. We can’t tell you much about how we use technology, but we can tell you plenty about what it’s like to work with us.

Who we are
Engineering is the beating heart of MI5, developing and maintaining capabilities that support all aspects of our business. We rely on employing DevOps engineers with vision and enthusiasm who act as our technical leaders to help extend and grow our current engineering capability. We use agile methodology to deliver products that are core to MI5’s operation, working to the full spectrum of investigative, analytical and corporate areas of the organisation.

Who you are
We are looking for passionate leaders in the technology world who are excited to take the initiative, be creative and drive engineering change across the intelligence agencies. To do this you will need strong communication and interpersonal skills alongside a flexible and reactive approach. You should be able to work independently, taking ownership of major developments and projects, but also be a strong team player. As a DevOps engineer your focus will be on making sure that we have the tooling and strategies to make our deployments repeatable, and our products scalable and highly available. Whilst retaining your role as an individual contributor, you will mentor and coach members of the team, establishing a vision for the products you work on and sharing knowledge amongst colleagues. You will have a direct impact on wider strategy, driving our engineering capability and culture forwards whilst continuing to support our fast-paced operational business. A thirst for personal development is crucial, being prepared to expand and develop your skills.

What you’ll do
You’ll work hand in hand with Software Engineering teams to ensure we have complete visibility of the health of our systems 24x7. You’ll work with your team to ‘automate everything’ and continuous improvement will be second nature. You’ll share our collective responsibility to keep the country safe and be keen to constantly improve yourself and your team. Our teams work closely with each other and with mission customers, so it’s important that you’re prepared to communicate and share your knowledge.

As a DevOps Engineer, you’ll be expected to:
•    Build and configure monitoring solutions to understand the state of our products and predict failures or problems before they happen.
•    Get involved in ongoing incidents to help us to recover quickly, identify what went wrong and ensure we learn from it.
•    Identify opportunities to automate manual processes in the development, integration, release and deployment of our software products.
•    Provide advice and support to our Software Engineers to help them understand how to build products which are supportable, scalable and highly available.
•    Organise and lead communities of practice for engineers to discuss and share ideas.
•    Support and develop junior colleagues through mentoring or line management and identify areas for your own development.

Learning and development is central to our engineering ethos and we invest heavily in our staff. There will be many opportunities to continue your personal and professional development, in both technical and soft skills. This could be through classroom training, books, online courses, on the job experience, working with colleagues across UKIC and wider Government, to name a few. We are committed to ensuring that our staff have the time and space to do this.

Recruitment Process

You will be invited to upload your CV and complete an online application form. If successful, you will be invited to a face to face interview at MI5, which will include competency based and job specific questions. This will also explore your motivation to work for MI5. The final stage is a security interview with one of our vetting team. For more information click here. Interview Preparation
