Who we are

MI5 has a large and wide ranging application estate with complex integration challenges. Our Application Architects need to understand this diverse and heterogeneous application environment, to provide designs and roadmaps for building new and evolving existing capabilities, to maximise the value offered to users. We operate across strategic and dynamic requirements from fascinating areas across our organisation.

Who you are

We are looking for passionate leaders in the technology world who are excited to take the initiative, be creative and drive engineering change across the intelligence agencies. You should have experience of successful application design and integration in large scale enterprise organisations. We’re interested in people who:

  • Can demonstrate technical expertise
  • Have the ability to design solutions and evaluate the merit of different technical options and approaches.
  • Enjoy communicating with technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Understand agile delivery methodology
  • Have a desire to work collaboratively by sharing ideas and experience across the wider architecture team.
  • Have strong experience from a development background in Java, Javascript or C#
  • Have the ability to explain the impact of application architecture to the business and technical community.


What you’ll do

You’ll share our collective responsibility to keep the country safe by gathering and interpreting requirements from the business and technical teams, including the implementation of proof of concepts to aid this process. As an application architect, you’ll be expected to:

  • Work with Dev Ops teams and fellow architects to identify and design end to end architectural solutions, advising on and contributing to the implementation of application architecture and system/component interfaces.
  • Contribute to system roadmaps and future visions to help stakeholders understand where and how technology benefits them.
  • Use your experience, as well as industry best practice and emerging trends, to initiate new ideas and conduct options analysis to recommend optimum solutions.
  • Design interface specifications, writing high level design and detailed design for chosen solutions.
  • Be involved in the implementation of new technologies and methods.

Recruitment Process

Initially, we will ask you to complete our pre-screening questions to find out if you meet our initial criteria. If you do meet these criteria we will then ask you to begin an application.

You will need to create a log in and provide your full name, email address and a memorable password. Once you have successfully created a personal account, you will be required to complete a registration form, providing contact details and equal opportunities monitoring information.

You will then be invited to upload your CV and complete an online application form. Our recruitment team will sift through your application. Successful applicants will be invited to a face to face interview at MI5, which will include some competency based questions and will explore your motivation to work for MI5. Interview Preparation.

If you pass this interview, you will be required to attend a second face to face interview with the hiring section at MI5. This will be followed by a security interview with a vetting officer. You should read about the vetting process and satisfy yourself that you meet the criteria outlined in the vetting pages of the How to Apply section prior to submitting an application.
