MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats like terrorism and attempts by states to harm the UK, its people and way of life. The Role

The post sits within an MI5 weapons analysis team, whose main responsibility is to provide technical assessment on terrorist weaponry such as IEDs and firearms. You’ll provide detailed, reliable assessments of intelligence that might relate to attempts to acquire and potentially deploy firearms and ammunition.

You’ll provide verbal and written assessments and deliver awareness briefings and training for colleagues across the intelligence agencies, as well as our police partners. Representing MI5 at a range of cross-governmental committees and working groups, you’ll help shape policy on firearms-related issues. You’ll liaise with a range of policy customers to ensure their programmes are informed by up-to-date intelligence and assessment. And, you’ll establish effective links with technical experts in other governmental departments to ensure we have access to the range of specialists we need.

The role involves individual project work as part of a small, collaborative team as well as regular liaison with internal and external partners and customers. Based in London, you’ll be expected to conduct regular liaison visits within the UK with occasional overnight travel for both UK and overseas conferences. Occasional out of hours working is required as part of the team’s on-call arrangements.

About You

You might have a military, police or firearms background; you’ll hold either military (e.g. Class 1 Armourer), civilian armourer or gunsmith qualifications. This will be supported by a degree in a scientific discipline or extensive relevant experience of working with firearms.

You’ll have a detailed, practical knowledge of firearms and be able to identify a wide range of military and commercial small arms, light weapons and ammunition. Knowledge of their design, performance and ballistics is essential, as is an understanding of the law in relation to firearms and ammunition. You may also be familiar with engineering and manufacturing processes used in weapon construction.

As you’ll be working closely with colleagues across MI5 and government, you’ll enjoy collaborating with others and be keen to share your knowledge and expertise. You’ll communicate technical assessments to technical and non-technical colleagues, so you’ll know how translate intricate information both verbally and written in a way that’s easy to understand.

Training and Development

Upon joining, you’ll undertake a three-day induction into the organisation. You’ll also be assigned an experienced mentor, who’ll be able to provide advice, guidance and support.
