MI5 is responsible for protecting the UK from threats to national security including terrorism, espionage and cyber. We are in the process of creating new Cross-Agency Services to deliver a range of services including human resources, finance, health and safety, vetting and commercial. This function will be at the centre of the agencies’ strategies and mission, and will allow us to deliver more, whilst keeping our staff and other assets safe and secure.

We are currently looking for a Health and Safety Advisor to support the business to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable - the health, safety and welfare of employees and others likely to be affected by our work.

The Role

In this role you will be working with the Safety Team who are responsible for the provision of a compliance driven service to the business, built around five core delivery areas;

  • Governance
  • Assurance
  • Compliance
  • Advice
  • Training

Key Responsibilities;

  • Delivery of assurance (internal audit).
  • Shaping and informing policy areas.
  • Delivery of toolbox and classroom training.
  • Carrying out and reviewing risk assessments.
  • Advice to the business – being the front door for competent H&S advice.
  • Accident and incident investigation.
  • Producing management information to enable the business to review health and safety performance.

Occasionally, you will be required to work in any of our offices across the UK, Northern Ireland and Overseas.

The Person

  • We are looking for individuals with a proven track record of promoting and developing a positive safety culture in an organisation, and its integration with other management functions
  • You must be able to undertake work-based projects to develop or implement positive health and safety policies in an organisation
  • You will be familiar with developing or implementing effective communication systems for health and safety information
  • You will be assessing and managing the health and safety risks of an organisation

It is essential for the individual to;

  • Have a minimum of 2 years experience in a Health & Safety role or similar compliance based role, ideally within more than 1 organisation with a diverse range of risks.  
  • Be working towards a NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent qualification in Health and Safety practice / aligned discipline.

Recruitment Process

The first thing we will ask you to do is complete our pre-screening questions to find out if you meet our initial criteria. If you do meet these criteria we will then ask you to begin an application.

invited to attend a competency-based face to face interview to further explore your skills and motivation for the role. If you are successful at this stage, you will be required to attend a security interview with a vetting officer. Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to apply, you must meet out residency criteria. You must be born or a naturalised British Citizen and one of your parents must be a British Citizen or have substantial ties to the UK. Candidates must normally have been resident in the UK for nine out of the last ten years. This is particularly important if you were born outside of the UK. You will nonetheless be considered if you have, for example, served overseas with HM Forces or in some other official capacity as a representative of Her Majesty’s Government, studied abroad, or lived overseas with your parents.
