Whatever your role at MI5, you’ll be contributing to protecting the UK from threats to national security including terrorism and espionage.

We currently need a Building Operations Manager to work within our building services area.  This is a unique opportunity to be part of a collaborative team focused on ensuring that MI5 buildings remain operational, safe and efficient.

The team works across three buildings and where public transport is not suitable, a pool car will be provided.  

You will be required to provide management cover for the three sites on a rota for 7 days a week working 12 hours day shifts from 06:30 to 18:30.

Working Pattern

• 42 hour a week on a 7-day shift cover.
• The shift pattern is 7 working shifts with 7 non-working shifts rotated around a 2-week period.
• 2 days on, 2 days off, 3 days on, 2 days off, 2 days on and 3 days off is the standard pattern. Weekend work is required.

You will be required to start shift work hours after a settling in period of approximately 4-8 weeks.

Key Responsibilities:

• To contribute technical input into minor works and projects as necessary, including attending work and project meetings. You will also familiarise yourself with, and witness test, new services systems and equipment.

• To build and maintain good relations with stakeholders, the Service Manager and other managers to meet departmental objectives. You’ll keep records and documentation up to date, issuing regular reports and attending head office meetings.

• To work closely with the Senior Security Officer on matters of site security and staffing and keep the Head of Physical Security informed of any security issues.

• Deliver building services through contractors including:

 - Maintenance and operation of the building and building management system;

 - Managing the FM contractor using the computer aided facilities management (CAFM) system, management information, service level agreements and reports.

 - Monitoring stock levels to ensure critical spares are always available and monitoring and recording utility usage. Inputting this into department sustainability objectives and targets.

• Ensure all work on our sites are carried out safely by making sure that:

 - Permits to work are issued where required and method statements and risk assessments are produced prior to work being carried out.

 - Ensuring FM services are delivered to a high standard taking account of cost, quality, customer service and available resources.

 - Managing stakeholder expectations, particularly in ensuring that the site and services are always available.

The successful candidate will be a team player with good initiative, judgement and organisational skills.  

We are looking for someone who can communicate with credibility and build strong working relationships with others. Whether you are exploring options with colleagues to address any issues or completing logs and handovers, you will be required to convey clear and concise messages.

A flexible approach and the ability to work well under pressure and prioritise are key. You’ll be keen to undertake further training and be physically fit enough to climb ladders and carry out internal inspections of plant.  A medical test may be required as part of the recruitment process.

Qualifications:

HNC Electrical / Building Services (or equivalent) with a minimum of 5 years’ experience or City and Guilds qualification with a minimum of 10 relevant years’ experience is essential, as is a full, current, clean UK driving licence.

Experience:

You will have shift working experience and IT skills, with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Systems including Word and Excel.

Ideally you will have knowledge of CAFM systems, BMS systems, Fire Alarm systems, Security systems, of Electrical testing and HV systems. An understanding of maintenance regimes, techniques, statutory compliance and life cycle planning would be beneficial.

Training and Development:

We will provide you with all the support and training that you need. If required, for example, you will receive training on: HV, LV, confined space, mechanical systems, water systems, health and safety and first aid.
