MI5 safeguards the UK against threats to national security including terrorism, espionage, cyber-attack and the spread of weapons of mass destruction. Part of our work involves listening to legally intercepted audio material. Our Speech and Acoustics Analysis team uses forensic techniques, highly developed skills and sophisticated technology to identify items of intelligence value in national security investigations. Whether working at the forefront of speech technology or drawing on expert audio and linguistic knowledge, our work is continually evolving and always challenging.


The role

As a Computational Linguist at MI5, you will identify, plan and conduct research and development work on cutting edge projects relating to speech processing technologies. You will be building and adapting models for speaker and language identification, automatic speech recognition and machine translation. This will see you working at the forefront of this fast-evolving field alongside commercial experts and other partner agencies, developing new capabilities to support the work of analysts.


The person

You will need to be able to apply theory and technical skills on a practical and pragmatic basis, and communicate highly complex technical information verbally and in writing to a range of audiences. Team working skills, flexibility and a strong customer service ethos are also vital in this role.


The skills

It is likely that you are a graduate with a genuine interest in linguistics, language and speech processing technologies. You may have studied Computational Linguistics, Mathematics, Signal Processing or Statistics. It is important that you have knowledge of modelling and coding. Ideally, you are experienced in Linux, Python, C# or Java programming. You may also have knowledge of the Phonetics and Phonology of English and/or another language, Socio Linguistics or Speech Science.

Recruitment process

The recruitment process for this role is outlined below (in order):

  • Eligibility Questions – you will answer a number of questions based on the requirements for the role.

  • Telephone Interview - this interview will further explore that you have the potential skills and motivation to work for MI5.
  • Face to Face Interview – this interview will further explore that you have the potential skills and motivation to work for MI5.
  • Security Interview – it is an interview to explore your life and experiences. This is an important part of the selection process, and is not a competency or capability based interview.
  • Occupational Health Assessment – this is to ensure you have the required level of hearing.

Guaranteed interview scheme

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible to apply, you must meet our residency criteria. You must be a born or naturalised British citizen and one of your parents must be a British citizen or have substantial ties to the UK.

Candidates must normally have been resident in the UK for nine out of the last ten years prior to application. This is particularly important if you were born outside the UK. You will nonetheless be considered if you have, for example, served overseas with HM Forces or in some other official capacity as a representative of Her Majesty’s Government, studied abroad, or lived overseas with your parents.

Due to vetting requirements you will need to be 18 years old, or above, to apply. Your application may take around six months to process.
