MI5’s mission is to keep the country safe from threats to national security, including terrorism, espionage and sabotage. As a Senior Behavioural Scientist you could play a leading role in embedding best practice behavioural science in the working practices of our investigations and intelligence collection operations. Your work will give us a unique insight into the complex and evolving threats that we face today. It doesn’t get more rewarding than that does it?

The role

You will work at a strategic level to capture requirements, commission work and support innovation to build behavioural science insights into the UK intelligence community’s capabilities.

You’ll lead on the delivery of behavioural science advice and assessments to investigators within MI5, the police and other agencies. You will also ensure that case management recommendations are tailored to inform high quality decision making and appropriately address risk. You will also advise and guide our operational officers involved in intelligence collection operations to use behavioural science to maximise results.

Innovation is important and part of your role will include developing methodologies and bespoke tools to improve our capabilities, through research and case validation.

You may be required to line manage a small, multidisciplinary team.

You will also have significant post-qualification experience in an academic or practitioner setting. Alternatively, you may have experience of applying cutting edge research to operational problems in the private sector. Or, your background could be in anthropology, clinical, forensic or occupational psychology.

If you have experience of formulating complex casework and working with multi-disciplinary teams to manage risk and support optimal functioning under pressure, then we’re interested to hear from you. Whatever your background, you will be using your skills and experience to keep the country safe.

In addition to a fulfilling and rewarding career at the forefront of behavioural science in the UK, you will work in a structured environment that offers extensive support, and continuous professional development.

Candidates that have a proven record of setting strategy and leading behavioural science and research teams will be considered for a more senior role. To be successful for this you should also have demonstrable programme management experience in a behavioural research context, and be able to show impact in a research to practice context. You will provide direction and support across the behavioural science capability, be able to supervise the developing practice of others and drive innovation and change to ensure MI5 remains at the forefront of applied behavioural science.
