MI5 safeguards the UK against threats to national security including terrorism, espionage, cyber-attack and the spread of weapons of mass destruction. Part of our work involves listening to legally intercepted audio material. Our Speech and Acoustics Analysis team uses forensic techniques, highly developed skills and sophisticated technology to determine the characteristics of language and identities of individuals of interest in national security investigations. Whether working at the forefront of speech technology or drawing on expert audio and linguistic knowledge, our work is continually evolving and always challenging.

The role

As an Audio Specialist, you will apply your audio engineering or sound production expertise in a role that demands highly nuanced listening skills and an excellent understanding of digital audio technology. You will work with our analysts, linguists and other colleagues to enhance the intelligibility of audio recordings which may be of low quality or where speech is drowned out by background noise. Through your technical assessments and specialist input, you will ensure that anything of intelligence value can be identified within the recording and delivered to investigators. You will also advise our operational teams on how best to collect audio material of suitable quality. Working at the forefront of this fast-evolving field alongside academics, commercial experts and other partner agencies, you will help develop standards, techniques and new audio product processing and analysis capabilities to support the work of our audio analysts.

The person

It is likely that you are already working in sound production, probably within the music industry, theatre, television, cinema or radio. What is essential is that you combine degree level knowledge in the audio visual, audio engineering or acoustics area (BA, MA, MSc or equivalent in Audio/Audio Visual or Audio Engineering or Acoustics) with solid professional experience of using Digital Audio Workstations and an interest in language.

You will need to be able to apply theory and technical skills on a practical and pragmatic basis, and communicate highly complex technical information verbally and in writing to a range of audiences. You will be a creative thinker, pay attention to detail, share ideas and generate innovative solutions. Team working skills and a strong customer service ethos are also vital. The Speech and Acoustics Analysis team often has to deliver work within operational deadlines, requiring flexibility and the willingness to adapt to changing priorities, including working out of hours and occasionally at short notice. Some travel within the UK may be required.

The skills

You will have experience of using Digital Audio Workstations such as Pro Tools, Adobe Audition, Wave Surfer, Praat, Soundforge or Soundscape and understand Digital Audio terms and file formats. You will have practical knowledge of Audio Plug-ins and hardware, including basic trouble-shooting. Ideally, you will understand the acoustics of speech and hearing, and how speech is generated, transmitted and received. You may have had some training or experience of forensic audio analysis. Any practical experience of developing in Python or Javascript or in the use of notebooks, such as Jupyter would also be advantageous.

This is a rare opportunity to take your career to another level. Join our team and we will support you in developing your personal, professional and technical skills at every opportunity, through both internal training and external courses, conferences or events. There may be an opportunity for some international travel.
