JOB PROFILE:

MI5 is responsible for protecting the United Kingdom against threats to national security.  We safeguard the UK against threats relating to terrorism, espionage and cyber-attacks’.  By joining MI5 as a driving instructor, you will be playing a significant part in keeping our country safe.

Your primary role will be conducting driving assessments for staff both in London and various locations around the UK.  All assessments follow a stringent reporting process, you will be required to assess a member of staff’s driving ability and be asked for your professional guidance relating to staff meeting the relevant criteria.

In addition, there will be the occasional requirement to run an up to a five-day training course, for members of staff who are already qualified drivers but are required to upgrade their skill level.  

To be eligible for this role, you will need to hold a DVSA approved driving instructor qualification, held for a minimum of two years.  Fleet driver qualification is preferred but not essential.   

We are seeking a confident and effective communicator as you will need to be comfortable delivering presentations and training staff, while assessing their driving capability effectively.  Strong interpersonal skills are required and an ability to work in a small team or autonomously is necessary.  

Once qualified within role, there will be the opportunity to develop your driver capability and upskill in various areas.

The role is based in central London. You will be required to live or be prepared to relocate within a commutable distance of the capital and within a 70-mile radius of the office.  This is a prerequisite prior to taking up the post and is non-negotiable.  

Through your primary role it is likely that you will frequently work outside of central London. To achieve this, you will be provided with access to vehicles for this work function.  A flexible approach to work and the ability to adapt to changing requirements is essential.  

MI5’s RECRUITMENT PROCESS:

If you are interested in taking up this position the recruitment team will ask you to complete the pre-screening questionnaire, to assess if you meet our criteria.  If you do meet the criteria, we will then begin the application process.

You will be required to complete a basic application form, providing contact details and equal opportunities monitoring information.  You will also be requested to submit your CV and answer some ‘Skills and Additional Information’ questions.  This will all be done electronically and our recruitment team will provide guidance how to do so.  

Following this the recruitment team will conduct a paper sift of applications.  Successful applicants will be invited to an assessment centre, comprising of a practical assessment testing your driving ability and a competency based interview.  Within a competitive process, a second interview may be required.  

Once the successful applicant has been determined the candidate will be asked to attend a security interview with a vetting officer.  You will also be required to complete a medical examination, including an eyesight and hearing test and achieve the required level of physical fitness.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

To be eligible to apply, you must meet our residency criteria.  You must be born or a naturalised British citizen and one of your parents must be a British citizen or have substantial links to the UK.

Candidates must normally have been residents in the UK for nine out of the last 10 years.  This is particularly important if you were born outside of the UK; however, we will still consider your eligibility if you have served overseas with HM Forces or in some other official capacity, as a representative of HM Government, studied abroad, or lived overseas with your parents.  

Due to the vetting requirements applicants will need to be 18 years old, or above to apply. Your application may take around six months to process.
