Software Engineering

Technology sits at the heart of everything we do at MI5, enabling us to disrupt serious threats to UK national security. We’re currently looking for students who want to learn from our talented software engineers working within our pioneering IT department, working on a project for an 11-week summer work placement.


The Role
This is your chance to join a dynamic team keeping the country safe for a work placement during your summer holiday. You’ll get the opportunity to write code to develop existing and new analytical technologies and software to drive our investigations and intelligence collection operations forward.  You can be assured that whatever projects you’ll be working on your work will be unique and your efforts will have a direct and rewarding impact on the success of MI5.

You will be working in a fast paced and supportive environment and you will use some of the most advanced technology around, such as our next generation digital intelligence processing platforms. By the end of your placement your work could already be in use by our analysts working on national security investigations.


Key Responsibilities
•    Act as a Java, C# .NET, HTML5/JavaScript or Oracle developer within a wider team to help tackle a technology project to solve real intelligence problems
•    Follow a fast, iterative, agile development approach
•    Enhance your technical skills during the internship by learning from our talented cadre of permanent staff
•    Gain experience working in larger teams and in a wider engineering department

The Person

For success in this role you’ll be expecting to achieve at least a 2:2 in your degree, graduating in Summer/Autumn 2020.

You should have a passion for solving problems using technology, and some existing basic programming experience in any language, preferably in Java, C# .NET or JavaScript. We’ll teach you the rest.
